Short Track Championships Highlights

Published Tue 04 Feb 2025

The inaugural short track championships got off to a good start with the smooth sounds of country star Luke Coombes playing next door in warm and windy conditions at Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday 01 February.

Australian Short Track Championships

Triple Jump
Desleigh Owusu made history by winning the inaugural Triple Jump event with an impressive showing of consistency. She recorded four legal jumps over 13m, with a best mark of 13.35m. While this was 30cm shorter than her ACT Championships performance from the previous week, it's worth noting that the ACT jump had a tailwind of +2.6.

60m Sprint
The women's 60m competition showcased exceptional talent.

  • Kristie Edwards delivered a breakthrough performance, dramatically improving her personal best to 7.27s in the heat, followed by an even more impressive 7.24s for 4th place in the final. This time would have stood as an Australian Record just weeks ago.
  • Olivia Rose Inkster and Bronte Pickering (PB) tied for 10th place with 7.52s.

Connor Bond continued his excellent form.

  • Improved upon his U23 club record set at Wollongong
  • Posted 6.78s in the heat despite a dramatic race alongside Jackson Rowe (who unfortunately suffered a hamstring injury)
  • Further improved to 6.76s for 7th place in the final

60m Hurdles
The hurdles event saw limited male participation but strong female performances.

  • Alexandra Richards qualified 8th with 8.67s, then improved the club record to 8.52s in the final
  • Junior athlete Catherine Mikan (16) showed remarkable resilience, recovering from hitting the first barrier to complete the race

All Comer Supporting Events

400m Hurdles

  • Isabella Guthrie competed after Canberra, facing challenging conditions in the swirling winds at SOPAC for the victory
  • Dominic Panozzo engaged in an exciting battle with Rohan Laurendet before unfortunately clipping the final hurdle
  • Rohan Laurendet posted a solid 52.5 and that time would have been a nice opener for Dom bouncing back from a DQ in Canberra

100m Sprint

  • Tara Hollyoak achieved a season best of 12.61
  • Phoebe Berglund recorded 12.93, narrowly missing her season best by 0.05 seconds

1500m

  • Ava Garnys maintained her consistency with 4:42.32, matching her Canberra performance from the previous week.

National 4x4 Teams Exhibition
The highlight of the All Comers was an exciting showcase of National 4x4 Teams.

  • Women's relay featured Jasmin Guthrie anchoring Australia GOLD against Ellie Beer
  • Men's event saw Sarthak opening against Cooper Sherman and Luke Stevens
  • U20 talents Brenton Kerr and Olly McDonald received valuable guidance from National record holder Darren Clark
  • Both Sydney University and Norths teams were thanked for their involvement with Australian training kit as the National squad prepare for World Championships qualification.
